Ça va? For four hours, nothing on TV except the Paris attacks. My French has been getting a good workout. Hope you are tucked up safe at home with a good stock of provisions.

Quant à moi, tout va bien.

Mon fils se trouvait quelques minutes avant l’attentat devant le Bataclan. Ensuite, il s’est réfugié dans l’appartement d’un copain, à proximité. Il connaît des personnes qui ont assisté au concert en question, et un de ses amis a été blessé par balles.

I don't know how long this link will be available.

People are beginning to ask: "Why all this fuss about France? Recently Boko Haram killed over 2000 people in one day. And what about the recent outrages in Turkey and Beirut? They were in the news briefly for a day or two. Are some human lives worth more than others?"
The French Ambassador (Lecourtier) is a guest on a panel show tonight. (I have had enough for one day.) Maybe this attack in Paris will be the catalyst for serious coordinated action. It looked as though Obama and Putin were having a really serious talk today. Maybe if ISIS were to attack the Imperial Palace in Beijing???

qu’il y ait une sorte de hiérarchie dans la valeur des vies humaines, mais c’est l’échelle des valeurs des média, c’est la logique des média et non pas celle des hommes, je pense.
Quoi qu’il en soit, Paris symbolise, dans le monde entier, un idéal de liberté.

Le texte suivant est un bel exemple du rôle que notre petite ville joue dans l’esprit de beaucoup de personnes :

Cela explique peut-être pourquoi un attentat à Paris choque particulièrement

Very well put.
On TV about half an hour ago, an independent member of the Federal parliament gave an interview in which he stated that Australia should withdraw all our (few) troops from the Middle East. If we were not fighting there, IS would have no reason to carry out terrorist activities in Australia. It is not our business if they carry out murderous attack in other countries.
Superficially attractive, but fatuously naïve. IS does not need a "reason".
However, there is an underlying spark of reason. Australia has enough on its hands with troubles in Timor, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, etc. We do not have the resources for even token police-work worldwide. Better that we look after our own region and do that properly.

Actually I would like an answer please, re usefulness of classes » answer
by JaneB82 (UN), Last modified: 2014-02-01, 02:58  Spam?
I am student of translation (French to English).  I am trying to decide which course would be more useful to take:

1) Computer Assisted Translation
2) Editing for Translation
3) French to English Translation for the Hospitality and Tourism Industries

Which will help me find work sooner?  The classes are expensive so I want to choose well.  Thank you.

French-English mouseover/mouse hover dictionary » answer
anonymous, 2012-01-05, 14:27  Spam?  90.209.49....
Salut! Does anyone know where I can download a French-English dictionary application/toolbar for general internet browsing? I have a Russian-English one, whereby if you hover the mouse over any word an English translation pops up. Is there anything similar for French?

Thank you in advance!

If you set French as your default language in Chrome then it will offer to translate any page you will be viewing in any language not listed in your list of languages. Other than that, I believe wordreference.com still has a dictionary toolbar you can enable in any browser.

Question about a French divorce document » answer
by Tam Wu, 2011-10-09, 06:35  Spam?  64.40.60...
A French divorce judgment was pronounced in an 'audience public ordinaire' on 7/20/2011 and the 'expédition conforme à l'original' was issued by the 'greffier' on 7/18/2011, that is 2 days before the divorce judgment was passed. Why?

I am translating a divorce document in which there is this statement: prononce le divorce aux torts partagés des epoux. What does it means?

to the why ? of the first part
Probably, the Registrar authorized/finalized the process/papers on his own time - and the judge rendered it official and public 2 days later.

And the second disamb. : Prononce - pronounce/anounce/declare official

divorce - divorce

aux torts partagés - to equal/mutual/shared faults - to equal/mutual wrongs of both parties (ex-husband and ex-wife) -> les époux -> spouses

Declare the divorce official implying equal wrong-doings from both parties.

"divorce with no blame" -> 'divorce sans torts'  (know that it always refer to religious wrong doings)

exemple from linguee :

Droit de la famille - 31 (1983), 34 R.F.L. (2d) 127 (C.S.Q.) (le tribunal prononce le divorce aux torts des deux parties compte tenu de l'adultère du père et de l'homosexualité de la mère: il conclut...

There is a  discrepancy between FR-DE and FR-EN .  The former has ;Inform.' Informatique, the latter ,'comp.'
'Computers '  Computers  is not a French word. Should we change the latter to  'Informatique / Computers' with a tag of 'inform.' , same as FR-DE.

I have constantly relied heavily upon dict.cc for German, but have been trying to find a website even remotely similar to it, but for French. I had to compile a list of websites that collectively did the same things for me that dict.cc did. Randomly, I searched Google for "dict.cc french" for the millionth time in my life tonight, only to find what I've been truly looking for all along! I am unbelievably happy and relieved, and can't wait until this dictionary is built-up!
