Is this song translation correct?

Hey,
I'm currently running a project that involves translating some part of the song called Gemini Feed by Banks. I'd honestly appreciate any help with this translation given down below (if there are any misinterpretations, wrong uses of particular words, etc.)

SONG IN ENGLISH:
And to think you would get him to the altar
Like he would follow you around like a dog that needs water
But admit it, you just wanted him smaller
If you would've let him grow, you could've kept his love

MY TRANSLATION TO FRENCH:
Et penser que tu aurais pu lui mettre sur l’autel
De façon qu'il te suive comme un chien désireux l’eau,
Mais reconnais que tu as voulu qu'il diminue
Si tu lui avais laissée l'épanouir, Tu aurais pu lui garder son amour

This means "to induce somebody to marry you". Is that what "mettre sur l'autel" means?
I see other errors there, but cannot correct them.

Sorry for the post above, I must've clicked something   Anyway, you are right. I took this phrase a bit literally as to keep its poetry. In the original the personal pronouns are different ('him' is replaced with 'me') that is why I used mettre sur l'autel to convey the act of taking somebody to the wedding altar.

Have you already entered this on at least one other forum? This shows up on a google search, you know.
"Mettre sur l'autel" is used for offerings placed on the altar, not for a marriage. I also, perhaps erroneously, think of Aztec human sacrifices whose blood is going to run over an altar.
"Un chien désireux l’eau" is ungrammatical; it just does not work.
"Tu aurais pu lui garder son amour." oh, crikey: I just don't know where to start trying to explain what is wrong with this.
